POLIO RESEARCH IN HARVARD UNIVERSITY (ENGLISH and FRENCH)

Dr. Kim Thompson of Harvard University, USA has conducted research for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) on the cost benefit of eradicating versus controlling polio. Her research demonstrated that while the immediate cost for eradicating polio was high, the long term costs of continuing to immunize children against polio and caring for those who contract polio was much, much higher.
Dr. Thompson is continuing her research to even better characterize the benefits of polio prevention and the costs associated with polio treatments around the world by surveying Ministers of Health. As her research helps support the GPEI, we have responded to her request for assistance and have written her a letter of support from International PolioPlus Committee Chair Bob Scott which she will be able to share with Ministers of Health as needed. I have attached a copy of that letter for your information.
If you are able, we ask that you contact your Minister of Health and encourage him/her to complete the survey when it is sent by Dr. Thompson. A copy of the draft survey is also enclosed for your information. If Dr. Thompson is having trouble receiving a reply from your Minister of Health, she may reach out to you directly to ask for assistance. We do not expect you to spend a great deal of time assisting Dr. Thompson, but if you are able to communicate with the appropriate officials to help her receive a response to her survey, it would be appreciated.

À l’attention des présidents de commission PolioPlus nationale et des conseillers PolioPlus nationaux chargés du plaidoyer en faveur de l’éradication de la polio
Le Dr Kim Thompson, de l’université de Harvard (États-Unis), a effectué une étude pour l’Initiative mondiale d’éradication de la polio visant à comparer les avantages financiers et humains de l'éradication de la polio à ceux d'un contrôle de la maladie. Ses recherches ont démontré que si les fonds nécessaires à court terme pour éradiquer la polio étaient élevés, les coûts à long terme de la poursuite des vaccinations et des soins aux malades de la polio l’étaient encore beaucoup plus.
Mme THOMPSON cherche actuellement à mieux identifier les avantages de la prévention de la polio ainsi que les coûts de traitement dans le monde en envoyant un questionnaire à tous les Ministres de la santé (voir copie ci-jointe). Son travail soutenant l’Initiative mondiale d'éradication et Mme THOMPSON ayant demandé l'aide de la Fondation, Bob Scott, président de la commission PolioPlus internationale, lui a envoyée une lettre de soutien qu’elle pourra présenter aux Ministres si besoin est. Vous trouverez ci-joint une copie de cette lettre.
Nous vous demandons donc, si possible, de bien vouloir contacter le Ministre de la santé de votre pays pour l’encourager à répondre à ce questionnaire dès qu’il/elle l’aura reçu. En cas de silence du Ministre, il se peut que Mme Thompson vous contacte pour solliciter votre aide. Nous savons que votre temps est précieux mais nous vous remercions d’avance de bien vouloir faire jouer vos contacts au gouvernement pour l’aider à obtenir une réponse.
