Global Polio Eradication efforts have benefited from high level support by U.S. president Barack Obama and his administration.
On 4 June during a major foreign policy speech he presented in
Cairo, Egypt,
president Obama announced that he would work with the organization of the Islamic Conference to eradicate polio. Then, on 11 June during his remarks to the
Parliament of Ghana, he again highlighted the USA commitment to eradicate polio.
Secretary of State Hilary Clinton also included
polio eradication among stated health priorities during her visit to India at the end of July.
Rotary is working to ensure that these stated commitments are backed by concrete actions (for example, we have requested that president Obama meet with his peers in the remaining endemic countries to discuss polio eradication.
At the end of July,
Bill Gates travelled to
India. While polio eradication was not the primary purpose of his visit, he took the opportunity to meet with the
Chief Minister of Bihar State, India, to encourage his continued focus on polio eradication. During his visit Mr. Gates noted, «
I have a new appreciation for how achieving, it is to vaccinate every child in the Kosi River embankment. However, we cannot let the polio eradication effort stall because it is difficult. We are ready to work with your government and all partners in the polio effort to stop transmission in Bihar and ultimately assure that their children are safe from the crippling disease».
Finally,
Ann Veneman, Executive Director of UNICEF, will visit Nigeria to help launch polio immunization campaign on 1-3 August and met with Nigerian state and federal officials to emphasize the need for continued operational improvement in that country. Ms. Veneman will also meet with Rotarians in
Nigeria during her visit.
IPPC chair Bob Scott had encouraged her to travel to Nigeria when he met with her during the UNICEF Executive Board in June. (…)
